The crown has found its rightful owner! French tennis player Arthur Fils has won the title at this year’s Cincinnati Masters, claiming his first career Masters 1000 trophy! In the grand final, Fils defeated the home favorite Frances Tiafoe with a score of 2-1 (6-3, 1-6, 6-0). The match was an unusual rollercoaster, where incredible streaks of games ultimately decided the winner.
Fils Saved Energy, Then Swept Tiafoe Off the Court
The first set was completely under Fils’s control. The Frenchman routinely closed out this part of the match 6-3, securing one break and facing no major issues. However, the momentum shifted drastically in the second set. Fils was almost invisible on the court, appearing to consciously conserve his energy for the decider. Tiafoe took full advantage of this drop in intensity, striking back to win the second set with a convincing 6-1.
Just when the crowd expected maximum drama in the third set, the new champion unleashed a brutal display of dominance. Fils shifted into top gear, completely blowing the American off the court and handing him a bagel (6-0) in the decisive set. Throughout the match, the Frenchman dominated in the winners department (23 compared to Tiafoe’s 9) and served brilliantly, firing 11 aces and winning an incredible 71% of points behind his first serve.
