Quarterfinal Preview (Friday, July 17): Spotlight on Maria Sakkari and Seed Derbies

Day five of the WTA Athens Open brings us the battles for the semifinals and a fantastic schedule across both courts. The main focus will be on the local favorite, but we are also expecting highly exciting duels between the top seeds.

Center Court: Sakkari in the Night Session

The program on the main stadium starts at 5:30 PM, opening with the third seed, the experienced Czech Barbora Krejcikova, and the Chinese player Qinwen Zheng. Krejcikova showed absolute dominance yesterday, but she now faces a significantly bigger challenge.

A real treat for the home crowd is reserved for the Night session – not before 7:30 PM. Greek favorite and fourth seed, Maria Sakkari, takes the court against the American representative Alycia Parks. Packed stands and a fiery atmosphere are expected as the crowd tries to carry Sakkari towards the semifinals.

Following this match, the Center Court program closes with a duel featuring the top seed, Dane Clara Tauson, who will cross rackets with the fifth seed, the young Czech hope Sara Bejlek.

Grandstand: Korneeva on the Hunt for Another Upset and Doubles Clashes

On the second most important court (Grandstand), the program also starts at 5:30 PM. The seventh seed from the Czech Republic, Tereza Valentova, will play against the young Russian Alina Korneeva, who enters this match full of confidence after dropping only four games against the second seed yesterday.

After the singles, the Grandstand will host the doubles action:

  • Doubles Quarterfinal: The American pair Harrison / Neel will play against the fourth seeds Lumsden / Tang.
  • Doubles Semifinal (TBA – To Be Announced): A true derby awaits us as the top seeds Chan / Kato meet the third seeds Chong / Piter.
