The fifth day of competition at the WTA Athens Open brought exciting quarter-final clashes. The favorites justified their status, and the home crowd had plenty of reasons to celebrate.
Krejcikova Reaches Semi-Finals Through Comebacks and Better Returns
The first match on Center Court was opened by the third seed Barbora Krejcikova and Qinwen Zheng. After an hour and 49 minutes of great battle, the experienced Czech won 6:4, 6:4. The Chinese player struggled with her initial shot, landing only 48% of her first serves, along with 7 double faults. Krejcikova read her serves perfectly and created 10 break opportunities, converting 4 of them. On the other hand, Zheng managed to realize only 2 of her 6 break points, which was not enough for a turnaround.
Sakkari, Carried by the Crowd and Perfect Serving, Takes Down Parks
The prime-time slot was reserved for the Greek crowd favorite, Maria Sakkari, who defeated Alycia Parks 6:4, 6:3 in just one hour and 16 minutes. Sakkari was brilliant on her serve, recording an incredible 85% first serve percentage and winning 73% of points behind it. The Greek tennis player played an exceptionally clean match, making only one double fault, unlike Parks who recorded 6. Sakkari finished the match by converting 4 of her 7 break chances.
Tauson Flawless on Serve Against Young Bejlek
The final match on Center Court brought a secure victory for the top seed, Clara Tauson, over Sara Bejlek with a score of 6:2, 6:3. The match lasted exactly one hour and 30 minutes. The Dane demonstrated absolute power on her serve – she won 100% (8/8) of her service games and saved the only break point she faced in the entire match. In addition, she constantly pressured the young Czech’s serve, capitalizing on 4 of the 11 break opportunities created.
Korneeva Continues Winning Streak on Grandstand
In the only quarter-final duel played on the Grandstand court, Alina Korneeva continued her excellent performances at this tournament. She managed to defeat the seventh seed, Czech tennis player Tereza Valentova, in straight sets. After a great battle and uncertainty in the first set, which Korneeva tipped in her favor with a score of 7:5, the young Russian was much more secure in the second part of the match and officially secured her place in the semi-finals with a 6:3 win.
