The Day 4 program at the Vanda Pharmaceuticals Athens Open brought dominance from European players on Center Court. While the first and third seeds routinely handled their business, the biggest upset was orchestrated by young Alina Korneeva, who eliminated the tournament’s second favorite.

Korneeva Overpowering Against Unrecognizable Li
The first match on Center Court brought a completely unexpected turn of events. Russian Alina Korneeva outclassed the second seed, American Ann Li, dropping only four games in the entire match (6:2, 6:2).
The American’s game was unrecognizable from the very start, plagued with major serving issues (only 47% points won on the first serve and two double faults). On the other hand, Korneeva was brilliant on the return, constantly applying pressure, which resulted in converting 6 out of 12 break points. The match concluded in just an hour and eight minutes.
Krejcikova Justifies the Favorite Role
In the second duel of the day, experienced Czech Barbora Krejcikova showed exactly why she is the third seed at the tournament. Krejcikova dominated against Frenchwoman Carole Monnet, allowing her only two games in a 6:0, 6:2 victory in an hour and 21 minutes of play.
Although Monnet managed to create opportunities to break serve, Krejcikova displayed exceptional mental stability in crucial moments, saving 7 of the 8 break points she faced, thereby completely breaking her opponent’s resistance.
Tauson Routinely Closes the Program
The final match on the main stadium was played between the top seed, Dane Clara Tauson, and Italian Miriana Tona. The Italian entered the main draw as a “Lucky Loser” following Ajla Tomljanovic’s withdrawal, and after eliminating domestic competitor Sakellaridi in the first round, she was hoping for another upset.
However, the favored Tauson proved to be too big of a challenge. In the first set, Tona managed to keep up to some extent, following the rhythm until 6:4. But in the second set, the Italian’s game completely fell apart. Tauson raised her level of aggression, did not allow her opponent a single break point opportunity in the entire match, and with a convincing 6:0 in the second set, sealed her spot in the next round after an hour and 11 minutes of play.
