Day 1 of the Vanda Pharmaceuticals Athens Open brought a true spectacle to the Center Court. With frenetic support from the stands giving the players incredible momentum, the home crowd had reasons to celebrate, but also to regret after the late-night drama.

Maria Sakkari as a Fury in the First Set
The biggest star of the tournament, Maria Sakkari, justified her role as the favorite and status as the fourth seed. Carried by a great atmosphere, the Greek played a phenomenal match against Polina Kudermetova.

- The first set was a true demonstration of power – Sakkari won it to “love” (6-0) in just 25 minutes of play.
- The Greek was extremely confident on her serve, winning 71% of points when her first serve landed.
- Sakkari recorded 3 aces and only 1 double fault throughout the entire match.
- The key to victory was the realization of break opportunities, where the local player was relentless, converting 5 out of 8 offered chances.
Late-Night Thriller: Parks Stopped Grammatikopoulou
The final match on the Center Court, which ended around 11 PM local time, brought a huge battle. Although she was the underdog on paper, the local wild card (WC) representative, Valentini Grammatikopoulou, put up fierce resistance against the favored Alycia Parks.

- We witnessed a true festival of breaks: Grammatikopoulou managed to break her opponent’s serve 5 times out of 11 opportunities.
- On the other hand, Parks converted 6 out of her 10 break points.
- The American dictated the pace with powerful serves, hitting 5 aces, but also gave away many points through as many as 13 double faults.
- The first set was the turning point – after a great battle, it went to the American in a tie-break with a score of 7-6(3).
Early Surprise: Zheng Eliminated the Sixth Seed
The program on the Center Court was opened by Qinwen Zheng and the sixth seed, Jessica Bouzas Maneiro. The Chinese player showed exceptional stability and deservedly won.

- Zheng served excellently throughout the duel, recording 7 aces.
- A fascinating fact is that the Chinese player won a massive 90% of her service games (9 out of 10).
