The third round (Round of 32) of the US Open men’s singles has officially concluded, bringing more drama, epic comebacks, and major upsets to the New York hard courts.
Van de Zandshulp Shines Bright in New York Once Again

After pulling off a massive upset by eliminating Alex de Minaur, Dutch player Botic van de Zandshulp continued his fierce campaign by defeating Belgian player Zizou Bergs 3-2 in sets. The match was a true trench warfare where the Dutchman fought back from behind twice, before immediately securing two breaks in the decisive fifth set to jump to a 4-0 lead and routinely close out the match (6-3). This brings him close to matching his best US Open result from 2021 when he reached the quarterfinals against Medvedev, while also matching his Wimbledon 2022 run to the Round of 16.
Incredible Comeback and Exit for Fritz
One of the biggest surprises came from Argentine Francisco Cerundolo, who engineered an epic comeback to defeat home favorite Taylor Fritz 3-2. Fritz opened the match aggressively, taking a 2-0 lead in sets, and looked bound for a routine finish when he broke serve early in the third to go up a set and a break. However, that was the end of the road for Fritz—Cerundolo struck back furiously, took full control, and did not allow Fritz a single break point for the remainder of the match.
Zverev Rests, Shelton Advances, and More Results
Alexander Zverev finally caught a breather after two exhausting five-set marathons in prior rounds, dispatching Chile’s Alejandro Tabilo in straight sets (3-0). Ben Shelton smoothly handled Denis Shapovalov (3-1), while the sole remaining French representative, Arthur Gea, outlasted American Michael Zheng in a tough five-set battle (3-2).
Elsewhere in the final batch of third-round matches, Italian Luciano Darderi swept Australia’s James Sweeny in straight sets (3-0), Karen Khachanov dismissed Benjamin Bonzi without dropping a set (3-0), and American Learner Tien edged out Czech prospect Jakub Mensik 3-2 in a battle of 2005-born youngsters. Additionally, Alexander Blokx defeated Flavio Cobolli 3-1.
