Rome (Foro Italico) – The Round of 16 at the Rome ATP Masters brought a generational shift into action and matches that will be talked about for a long time! The new Spanish “Armada”, led by the incredible boys born in 2006, Rafael Jodar and Martin Landaluce, dominantly secured their spots in the quarterfinals. Meanwhile, Italy celebrates a routine victory by Jannik Sinner, as well as an epic comeback by Luciano Darderi against the second seed, Alexander Zverev!
Spanish Class of 2006: Jodar and Landaluce Unstoppable
Spanish tennis doesn’t need to worry about the future. Teenagers Rafael Jodar and Martin Landaluce demonstrated top-tier tennis, both advancing with a maximum of 2-0 in sets.
Jodar (32) simply “swept” the American Learner Tien in just an hour and 15 minutes of play. The 6-1, 6-4 score perfectly reflects the events on the court. The young Spaniard won a massive 59% of total points (60/102) and dominated on his serve, not allowing his opponent a glimmer of hope.
On the other hand, Martin Landaluce had a tougher task against the powerful Hamad Medjedovic, but triumphed 7-5, 6-4 after 1 hour and 48 minutes of battle. Landaluce was exceptionally reliable on his first serve, winning a fantastic 76% of points (34/45), which made the key difference in crucial moments and tipped the match in favor of the Spaniard (a total of 76 points won against Medjedovic’s 65).
Italian Miracle: Darderi Survives Match Point and Outclasses Zverev
The craziest match of the tournament was played by the home favorite Luciano Darderi (18) and Alexander Zverev (2). After Zverev easily took the first set 6-1, it seemed we were in for a quick finish. However, a marathon tie-break ensued in the second set, which Darderi, after saving a match point, won with a score of 14-12!
The German broke down completely mentally, while Darderi flew across the court in the third set, handing a “bagel” to the world number two – a final 1-6, 7-6(12), 6-0 after an incredible 2 hours and 26 minutes of battle.

Sinner Routine, Khachanov Stops Prizmic
The first seed and absolute crowd favorite in Rome, Jannik Sinner, did not allow any drama. He routinely defeated his compatriot Andrea Pellegrino 2-0 in sets, booking his spot in the quarterfinals, where he will be the main contender for the trophy.
The fairy tale of Croatian Dino Prizmic has also ended. His impressive streak in Rome was stopped by the experienced Karen Khachanov with a score of 6-1, 7-6(2). Although Prizmic put up fierce resistance in the second set, Khachanov was unstoppable with 27 winners and 7 aces, securing the triumph after 1 hour and 57 minutes of play.
