The Round of 32 at the ATP Hangzhou Open has concluded, and day three brought continued success for French players alongside major disappointment for the home crowd.
Hugo Gaston joined his compatriots in the Round of 16 after comfortably defeating Japan’s Sho Shimabukuro in straight sets (6-4, 6-4). Gaston dictated the match tempo from the start, relying on an excellent first serve, winning 81% of those points (25/31). Although the Japanese player had five break point opportunities, he managed to convert only one, whereas Gaston was much more clinical, converting 3 of 6 break points. Ultimately, the Frenchman won 52% of the total points (64/122), compared to his opponent’s 48% (58/122), smoothly closing out the match.
Three Defeats for Chinese Representatives
Out of the four local players in the main draw action, only Yunchaokete Bu managed to survive the opening hurdle. He met expectations by defeating American Michael Zheng with a routine 6-4, 6-3.
The rest of the Chinese lineup had a day to forget. Players who received wildcard entries from the organizers made an early exit. The biggest upset was the elimination of Zhizhen Zhang, who was easily beaten by Coleman Wong in straight sets (6-3, 6-3). Jie Cui put up a stronger fight but ultimately had to shake hands with Paraguay’s Daniel Vallejo after a three-set battle (6-1, 6-7(2), 6-4).
Fajing Sun, who valiantly fought his way through the qualifiers to reach the main draw, suffered a heavy defeat against Roman Safiullin. The Russian player gave him no room to breathe, winning convincingly 6-2, 6-0.
