ATP Munich 2026: Zverev Survives Drama, Shelton Stops Fonseca, Molcan in Form of a Lifetime

Last Updated:

The quarterfinal day on the Munich clay brought us everything we love about tennis—huge comebacks, dominant performances, and the end of the fairytale for some fan favorites. Alexander Zverev once again had to do it the hard way, Joao Fonseca was stopped in his tracks, while Alex Molcan continued his impressive winning streak.

Here is a detailed analysis of all four quarterfinal matchups.

Zverev Struggles Again but Finds a Way to the Semis

Top seed Alexander Zverev tested the nerves of the home fans once again. After dropping the first set, the German engineered a complete turnaround to defeat Francisco Cerundolo 2:1 (5:7, 6:0, 6:2).

Although he struggled early on, Zverev raised his level as the match progressed and constantly pressured his opponent’s serve, converting 7 of his 12 break point opportunities. The Argentine significantly aided the German’s cause with his mistakes—Cerundolo finished the match with a whopping 40 unforced errors.

Shelton Ends Fonseca’s Fairytale

Ben Shelton managed to tame the Brazilian wonderkid, Joao Fonseca, securing a 2:1 (3:6, 6:3, 6:3) victory.

In the crucial moments, the American relied on his biggest weapon—his serve. Shelton won an impressive 84% of his first-serve points (38 of 45) and fired 7 aces. The match was filled with aggressive baseline exchanges, with Shelton hitting 30 winners compared to Fonseca’s 18. Even though Fonseca put up a great fight, Shelton saved 5 of the 7 break points he faced to deservedly advance to the next round.

Molcan Cruises Past Shapovalov Easier Than Expected

Alex Molcan continues his brilliant run on clay. The Slovak routinely and much easier than anticipated eliminated Denis Shapovalov 2:0 (6:4, 6:4).

The Canadian completely underperformed in this match, giving away a massive number of free points—he committed 35 unforced errors, compared to just 9 from the highly disciplined Molcan. With this convincing victory, Molcan confirmed his terrifying current form, considering he has suffered only one defeat in his last 10 matches across two consecutive tournaments!

Cobolli Routinely Finishes the Job Against Kopriva

Italian Flavio Cobolli (4th seed) allowed no room for an upset and secured his semifinal spot without much trouble, defeating Vit Kopriva 2:0 (6:3, 6:2).

Cobolli was exceptionally solid under pressure, saving 5 of 6 break points. On the other hand, Kopriva struggled heavily with shot control throughout the entire match, which is best reflected in his 31 unforced errors.
