American tennis player Ben Shelton has successfully defended his title at the Montreal Masters! In the grand All-American final, Shelton showed formidable form and routinely defeated Brandon Nakashima with a score of 2:0, by sets 6:3, 7:6(4). The match lasted only 1 hour and 29 minutes.
Formidable Serve and a Match Without Opportunities for Nakashima
As the final statistics clearly show, Nakashima simply had no chance for a turnaround in this match. The defending champion was an insurmountable obstacle on his serve, not allowing his opponent absolutely a single break point during the entire match (0/0).
Shelton won an incredible 100% of his service games (10 out of 10). His dominance when hitting the initial shot is also reflected in a fantastic 86% of points won on his first serve (32 of 37), as well as an outstanding 76% of points won on his second serve (13 of 17). Nakashima simply had no solution for this kind of offensive.
Match Flow: A Quick First Set and Drama in the Tiebreak
The first set was completed in just 33 minutes of play. Shelton broke the set open in the seventh game when he took Nakashima’s serve for a 4:3 lead, and then the pressure paid off again in the ninth game, where he closed the set with another break for 6:3.
In the second set, which lasted 56 minutes, we saw a much bigger battle. Nakashima managed to stabilize his game and hold all his service games, taking the set into a tiebreak. However, Shelton demonstrated his class in the decisive moments as well, making the key mini-breaks to win 7:4 in the tiebreak and secure another title.
The champion finished the match with 22 winners and only 12 unforced errors, while Nakashima recorded 19 winners alongside 21 unforced errors. Overall, Shelton won 65 of the 118 points played in the match (55%), crowning a perfect week in Canada.
