After a spectacular and exhausting week on the grass courts of the Terra Wortmann Open, we have our finalists for the 2026 edition! Although the home crowd in Germany had high hopes for their heroes, today’s grand final at 14:30 will feature a pure American derby between Taylor Fritz and Frances Tiafoe.
Here is a look back at the incredible week behind us, who disappointed, and who delivered massive sensations before the final itself.
๐พ Zverev stopped in front of the home crowd
Reigning Roland Garros champion, Alexander Zverev, arrived in Halle full of confidence. The German was knocking down obstacles one by one โ in the Round of 16 he defeated Yannick Hanfmann (6-3, 7-6), and in the quarterfinals, he won a tough match against Raphael Collignon 2-0 in tiebreaks (7-6, 7-6).
However, in the semifinals, he ran into an incredibly in-form Taylor Fritz. In a match full of devastating serves and long grass-court rallies, Zverev won the first set in a tiebreak, but the American managed to orchestrate a complete comeback and silence the stands, winning 6-7, 6-4, 7-5.
๐ฅ Altmaier the hero of the tournament: Hurkacz and Medvedev fall
Although he didn’t reach the title, there is no doubt that Daniel Altmaier left his mark on this tournament! The home player played the tennis of his life and staged two monumental upsets.
First, in the Round of 16, he shocked the Polish bomber and grass-court specialist, Hubert Hurkacz, defeating him after a comeback in three sets (3-6, 6-3, 7-5). His fairy tale continued in the quarterfinals where he took down the top seed Daniil Medvedev. Altmaier showed incredible mental strength and triumphed 6-4, 6-7, 6-4.
However, he ran out of gas in the semifinals. The powerful Frances Tiafoe routinely eliminated him with a score of 6-1, 6-3. Despite this loss, it was a fantastic tournament for Altmaier, who can be incredibly proud of reaching the semifinals of a prestigious ATP 500 event.

- Taylor Fritz had to go through hell to reach the final. Before taking down Zverev, Fritz played the match of the tournament in the quarterfinals against his compatriot Ben Shelton, winning it after three incredible tiebreaks (6-7, 7-6, 7-6).
- Frances Tiafoe, on the other hand, after eliminating Felix Auger-Aliassime in a dramatic quarterfinal (3-6, 6-3, 7-6), capitalized on Altmaier’s fatigue and arrives in the final with preserved energy, ready for the American showdown.
