The first four round of 16 matches at the ATP Japan Open in Tokyo are complete, bringing plenty of excitement, great tennis, and more surprises. The French players continue their impressive run, while the Greek star suffered another early exit.
Munar and Fils Cruise Through
Spaniard Jaume Munar, who created a massive upset in the previous round by knocking out third seed Taylor Fritz, continued his brilliant form. Munar absolutely dismantled Portugal’s Jaime Faria, dropping only two games in a match that ended 6-1, 6-1.
Arthur Fils continues to crush everything in his path. Due to the previously mentioned administrative errors, Fils had to play the qualifiers, but that didn’t stop him from easily defeating this year’s US Open semifinalist, Frances Tiafoe, 6-3, 7-5 in the round of 16. The young Frenchman controlled the match, needing just one break of serve in each set to secure the victory.
Another Tsitsipas Slump and Solid Jacquet
In the most tightly contested match of the day, Valentin Vacherot mounted a comeback to eliminate Stefanos Tsitsipas 4-6, 7-6(5), 6-4. The Greek player took the first set but faded as the match progressed, showing that he is still struggling to find his old 2021 form when he was the World No. 3.
Frenchman Kyrian Jacquet confirmed his excellent shape by defeating Italy’s Luciano Darderi 6-3, 7-6(5). Jacquet held the initiative throughout the entire match and did not face a single break point. He converted one of his six break opportunities in the first set, while in the second set, he had to wait for the tiebreak to close out the match and secure his spot in the quarterfinals.
