ATP Shanghai 2026: Disaster for the Americans and a Brilliant Arthur Gea

The first eight matches of the third round (Round of 32) at the Rolex Shanghai Masters delivered high drama, but it turned out to be a disastrous day for the American contingent.

Gea Shocks Shelton, Bublik Outlasts Nakashima in a Thriller

The day’s biggest upset came from young Frenchman Arthur Gea, who eliminated heavily favored Ben Shelton in two tight tie-breaks, winning 7-6(5), 7-6(3).

Following that, Alexander Bublik completed a dramatic comeback to defeat Brandon Nakashima 2-1 (6-7(7), 6-3, 7-6(5)). In the opening set, both players served exceptionally well until the tie-break, where Bublik squandered two set points, allowing Nakashima to punish the mistakes and take the lead. The second set was dominated by the servers until the eighth game, when Bublik converted his very first break point of the match and confidently served out the set 6-3. The decider mirrored the first set—without a single break point, it went into a final tie-break. Bublik again missed his first two match points but finally capitalized on his third opportunity on Nakashima’s serve to seal the victory.

The miserable day for Team USA was compounded by Frances Tiafoe, who fell to Spain’s Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in a tight three-setter, 7-6(7), 4-6, 7-6(8). Remarkably, Fokina won the match without breaking Tiafoe’s serve once, securing his two sets entirely through clutch tie-breaks.

Zverev Survives a Scare, Khachanov Cruises

In other action, second seed Alexander Zverev had to dig deep to overcome a fierce challenge from France’s Quentin Halys. Zverev ultimately triumphed in three sets, 6-4, 6-7(8), 6-3. Unlike Halys and Gea, French veteran Adrian Mannarino struggled and was comfortably beaten by Russia’s Karen Khachanov 6-2, 6-4.

Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz was pushed hard by Chinese wildcard Yi Zhou but managed to secure a 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 victory. Alex De Minaur safely navigated past Japan’s Rei Sakamoto with a 7-6(8), 6-4 win, and Jakub Mensik continued his impressive run by defeating Francisco Cerundolo 6-3, 3-6, 6-2.
