ATP Beijing 2026: Djokovic Makes a Winning Return, Khachanov and Gea Advance

The first round (Round of 32) of the Beijing tournament is underway, and the opening matches have already delivered high-quality tennis and confident performances from the favorites.

Djokovic Makes a Winning Return to Beijing

The match of the day featured Novak Djokovic and Nuno Borges, with Djokovic claiming a 2-0 victory in straight sets, 6-3, 7-6(2). Following early exits at Cincinnati and the US Open, all eyes were on Djokovic and his physical readiness—especially considering he has never lost a match at this tournament.

Returning to Beijing after 11 years, Djokovic opened the duel brilliantly, securing an early break for a 3-0 lead, which he comfortably maintained to take the first set. Despite facing minor trouble when down 15-40 on his serve in the second set, Novak saved both break points and kept his composure. The second set remained tight, but Djokovic quickly made up for a missed break point opportunity by dominating the tie-break 7-2.

Great Start for Khachanov and Local Wildcard Bu

Home player Y. Bu lived up to the organizers’ expectations. Following his quarterfinal loss to Russian Safiullin at the Hangzhou Open, he received a main draw wildcard for the China Open and eliminated Argentine J. M. Cerundolo in a first-round comeback, 2-1 (2-6, 7-5, 6-4).

K. Khachanov continued his excellent form, carrying momentum from his US Open semifinal run. He easily defeated the Canadian F. Auger-Aliassime 2-0 (6-3, 6-3), without allowing a single break point opportunity throughout the match.

Another local player with a wildcard, Z. Zhang, suffered a 2-0 (6-4, 6-3) defeat against Frenchman A. Gea, who entered the main draw from the qualifiers without dropping a single set. In the other completed match, J-L. Struff routinely dispatched T. A. Tirante 2-0 (6-1, 6-4).
