The BNP Paribas Open 2026 is officially underway. The first round delivered some intriguing results, with a few notable upsets and some expected wins from the seeded players.
Match of the Day – Berrettini def. Mannarino 4-6, 7-5, 7-5
Matteo Berrettini showed real fighting spirit, coming from a set down to defeat Adrian Mannarino in three competitive sets. The Italian looked sharp on his serve and grew stronger as the match progressed — a promising sign for his campaign.
Biggest Upset – Shapovalov def. Tsitsipas 6-2, 3-6, 6-4

Denis Shapovalov produced an impressive performance to eliminate Stefanos Tsitsipas in the opening round. Tsitsipas never found his rhythm and was outplayed in a surprisingly one-sided affair.
Croatian Interest – Prižmić def. Schoolkate 7-6, 3-6, 7-5
Dino Prižmić showed great mental strength, recovering from losing the second set to close out the match in three. The young Croatian will face a tough test in the next round.
Veteran Watch – Monfils def. Galarneau 6-3, 6-4
Gaël Monfils, playing on a wild card, delivered a commanding straight-sets victory. The veteran Frenchman looked energetic and motivated on the Indian Wells hard courts.
Hurkacz Stunned – Kovacevic def. Hurkacz 7-6, 7-6
One of the bigger surprises of the round saw Hubert Hurkacz fall to American qualifier Alex Kovacevic in straight sets. Hurkacz never found his best tennis and was outplayed throughout.
