Ugo Humbert booked his place in the semi-finals of the Rotterdam ATP 500 with a convincing straight-sets victory over Christopher O’Connell, delivering a composed and tactically sharp performance on Centre Court.
The Frenchman controlled the match from start to finish, neutralizing O’Connell’s game and capitalizing on a significant drop in level from the Australian.
First Set: Humbert Strikes Late
The opening set was defined by strong serving from both players. Humbert and O’Connell held serve comfortably, with neither allowing a single break point through the early stages.
The breakthrough came at 5–4 in Humbert’s favor, when the Frenchman stepped up on O’Connell’s serve. After creating two break opportunities, Humbert converted the second to clinch the set 6–4.
It was a disciplined opening set from Humbert, who remained patient and waited for the right moment to apply pressure.
Second Set: One-Way Traffic
The second set followed a completely different pattern. O’Connell’s level dropped sharply, with the Australian struggling to find rhythm and committing error after error.
Humbert capitalized immediately, breaking serve in both the second and fourth games to race into a commanding 5–0 lead.
Serving to stay in the match, O’Connell showed brief resistance, saving two match points and holding serve for a consolation game. However, Humbert quickly shut the door.
Humbert Seals the Win in Style
Serving for the match, Humbert delivered a flawless game, winning all four points to close out a dominant 6–4, 6–1 victory.
The statistics underlined his control throughout the contest. Humbert was perfect at the net, winning all six points on six approaches. He also claimed 78% of points behind his first serve, compared to just 54% for O’Connell.
On return, the difference was equally clear, with Humbert winning 44% of return points, double O’Connell’s 22%.
O’Connell, who had caused an upset in the previous round by defeating Cameron Norrie, was unable to reproduce that level against the world No. 36.
With this win, Humbert becomes the first semi-finalist in Rotterdam and will face the winner of the match between home favorite Tallon Griekspoor and Alex De Minaur.
