The opening four games were evenly contested, with both players holding serve comfortably and offering no break opportunities. In the fifth game, O’Connell created the first break point of the match and converted immediately, gaining a crucial advantage.
From that moment on, the Australian remained solid on serve, closing out the set without further complications to take the opener.
Second Set: Royer Responds with Determination

The second set followed a similar pattern early on. Once again, the fifth game proved decisive as O’Connell earned another break to move ahead. This time, however, Royer reacted instantly, breaking back in the very next game to level the score at 3–3.
Royer continued to raise his level, creating multiple break opportunities on both sides. His persistence paid off in the tenth game, where he secured a decisive break to win the set 6–4 and force a deciding third set.
Deciding Set: O’Connell Holds His Nerve in the Tie-Break
O’Connell took control early in the final set, breaking Royer at the start and confirming the break to establish a 2–0 lead. He maintained that advantage as the set progressed.
Serving at 5–4, O’Connell earned two match points on Royer’s serve, but the Frenchman showed resilience and managed to escape, pushing the set into a tie-break. That proved to be Royer’s final resistance.
In the tie-break, O’Connell took charge, closing out the match and securing his place in the next round after an entertaining contest.
