Sabalenka proves too strong for fearless teenager
One of the most compelling stories of the Australian Open came to an end on Day 10, as Aryna Sabalenka stopped the remarkable run of American teenager Iva Jovic in straight sets. While Jovic entered the match with growing confidence after a series of impressive performances, the Belarusian proved to be a step too far at this stage of the tournament.
Sabalenka’s power, experience and composure under pressure ultimately defined the contest, as she controlled the key moments and prevented Jovic from building sustained momentum.
First-set resistance, missed chances
The opening set offered Jovic her best opportunity to challenge the favorite. Sabalenka secured an early break to move ahead 2–0, then consistently protected her serve to maintain control of the set.
At 5–3, Jovic fought back bravely and created three break points that could have shifted the momentum. However, Sabalenka held firm under pressure, closing the set 6–3 and denying the teenager a potential route back into the match.
Sabalenka accelerates as Jovic fades
After a competitive first set, the second unfolded very differently. Jovic struggled to reset mentally, while Sabalenka raised her level and imposed herself from the baseline. The result was a dominant display, as the Belarusian raced through the set 6–0 to seal her place in the next round.
The contrast between the two sets highlighted Sabalenka’s ability to capitalize quickly once an opening appeared.
A breakthrough tournament despite defeat
Despite the loss, Jovic leaves Melbourne with her reputation significantly enhanced. Her performances throughout the tournament marked her as one of the standout discoveries of this Australian Open, showcasing both talent and competitive courage against elite opposition.
The ranking points earned during this run are expected to propel her significantly up the WTA rankings, reinforcing the sense that women’s tennis has gained a new and exciting prospect for the future.
As the women’s draw continues to narrow, attention now turns to the remaining decisive encounters outlined in our Australian Open 2026: Day 10 Preview.
