The fourth day of the ATP tournament in Kitzbuhel brought us a fantastic tennis schedule with a total of eight matches played across the complex. While the outside courts saw genuine three-set dramas, Center Court delivered a major upset alongside several highly convincing performances by clay-court specialists.
The biggest sensation of the day was definitively Quentin Halys’s victory over the heavily favored Valentin Vacherot, currently ranked 19th on the ATP list.
Upset of the Day and Center Court Dominance
Quentin Halys played a phenomenal match, eliminating Vacherot with a score of 6-3, 6-4 after 1 hour and 19 minutes of play. The Frenchman displayed incredible reliability on his serve, hitting 5 aces and winning 77% of his first-serve points (24/31). Highlighting his dominance, Halys won all 10 of his service games (100%), not allowing his opponent to break him a single time.
Regarding the highly anticipated clash between Mariano Navone and Jan-Lennard Struff, the outcome is not a massive surprise given the surface. Navone, a classic clay-court specialist, completely neutralized the tall German whose game is far better suited to faster courts. The Argentine cruised to an incredible 6-0, 6-3 victory in just 1 hour and 5 minutes. Struff struggled immensely on his first serve, winning only 41% of those points (12/29), which Navone capitalized on by converting 6 out of 11 break point opportunities.
The remaining matches on Center Court saw the favorites comfortably justify their status:
- Tomas Martin Etcheverry routinely defeated local representative Jurij Rodionov 6-2, 7-6(4). Etcheverry defended his serve exceptionally well, saving 3 out of 5 break points while winning 69% of the points behind his first serve. TXT+ 1
- Defending champion Alexander Bublik overcame Facundo Diaz Acosta 6-3, 7-5. Bublik relied heavily on his powerful serve, firing 8 aces and saving 5 of the 7 break points he faced. TXT+ 1
Marathons and Drama on the Grand Stand and Küchenmeister
Unlike Center Court, the crowd on the Grand Stand was treated to true marathon battles.
Sebastian Baez needed 2 hours and 27 minutes of grueling baseline exchanges to break the resistance of Arthur Rinderknech, eventually winning 7-6(8), 2-6, 6-4. The Frenchman bombarded his opponent with an impressive 21 aces, but Baez remained composed in the crucial moments, converting 3 of his 4 break point opportunities.
Another marathon took place in the match between Alex Molcan and Daniel Altmaier, where the Slovak celebrated a comeback victory, winning 6-3, 3-6, 7-5. Although Altmaier served 8 aces compared to Molcan’s 5, the Slovak used his aggressive returning to secure 5 breaks from 13 chances.
Ignacio Buse also secured his spot in the next round after dropping the first set, defeating Kilian Feldbausch 2-6, 6-2, 6-2.
On the Küchenmeister court, in the only match played on that surface today, German player Yannick Hanfmann defeated Marco Trungelliti with a score of 6-4, 7-6(2).
