Barbora Krejcikova is the champion of this year’s WTA Athens Open! The Czech tennis player defeated the local hope Maria Sakkari in the grand final on Center Court with a score of 7:6, 6:3, after one hour and 45 minutes of top-tier tennis.
Sakkari Drops a Big Lead in the First Set
Carried by incredible support from the stands, Sakkari opened the match furiously. The Greek tennis player played brilliantly at the beginning, broke her opponent’s serve early, and quickly took a 4:1 lead in the first set. However, the experienced Krejcikova did not panic. She managed to get the break back, tie the score at 4:4, and take the set into a suspenseful tie-break. In the decisive moments of the tie-break, Krejcikova was calmer and resolved this part of the match in her favor with a score of 7:5, after 59 minutes of a great battle.
Flawless Break Point Conversion on Both Sides
Losing the first set after having the lead left a mark on Sakkari’s game in the continuation. Although the Greek tennis player was the first to get a break again in the second set (for a 2:1 lead), Krejcikova immediately replied with a re-break (2:2). The key moment happened at the score of 4:3, when Krejcikova secured a new break (for 5:3), and then confirmed the victory with a confident serve to win the title.
What particularly stands out in the statistics of this match is the 100% conversion rate of break opportunities on both sides. Krejcikova capitalized on all three of her break points (3/3), while Sakkari was also flawless on her two (2/2). Sakkari finished the match with 5 aces compared to Krejcikova’s 2, but the Czech was much more reliable regarding her first serve percentage (67% compared to Sakkari’s 49%).
