The first day of June at Roland Garros brought us the beginning of the battles for the quarterfinals, and judging by the first matches, a spectacular weekend awaits us in Paris! While some favorites routinely did their job, others had to “bleed” on the clay, and one match threatens to enter the history of this year’s tournament.
Dominance: Auger-Aliassime and Berrettini Flawless
The Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime seems unstoppable! After surviving the drama against Nakashima in the previous round, today he showed why he is one of the dark horses of the tournament. Against the tricky Chilean Alejandro Tabilo, Felix played with surgical precision and celebrated a convincing 3-0 victory (6-3, 7-5, 6-1), denying his opponent even the slightest chance for a surprise.
No less impressive was Matteo Berrettini. The Italian is slowly but surely returning to his recognizable form. His victim was the hero of the previous round, the Argentine Juan Manuel Cerundolo. Although the second and third sets were decided only in dramatic tie-breaks, Berrettini demonstrated a devastating serve and incredible calmness in crucial points, finishing the job with a maximum score (6-3, 7-6(7), 7-6(8)).
Italian tennis is truly shining this spring in Paris, as besides Berrettini, Flavio Cobolli also secured his place in the next round, beating the American Zachary Svajda in four sets.
Gladiatorial Battle: Arnaldi Breaks Tiafoe’s Resistance!
What a match we witnessed! American Frances Tiafoe and Italian Matteo Arnaldi played a match that melted the hearts and nerves of the fans, culminating in a spectacular victory for Arnaldi.
After trailing 2-1 in sets, the young Italian found the strength to force a fifth set after a tense tie-break. In the deciding set, Arnaldi kept a cool head and managed to win 6-4. The final score reflects the equality and intensity of the match: 3-2 (7-6(5), 6-7(7), 3-6, 7-6(3), 6-4) in favor of Arnaldi. A true display of resilience and high-level tennis!
