What a day at the Mutua Madrid Open! The Round of 16 brought us an absolute tennis spectacle, marathon matches, the elimination of huge favorites, and the continuation of unreal stories by young hopes who never cease to amaze the crowd.
Here is a detailed overview of the most interesting matches and the complete schedule for the quarterfinals.
Casper Ruud vs Stefanos Tsitsipas: Marathon of the Day Goes to the Norwegian (2-1)
In by far the most exciting match of the day, Casper Ruud defeated Stefanos Tsitsipas 2-1 (6-7, 7-6, 7-6) after an incredible 3 hours and 1 minute of play. The match was full of twists and unbelievable tennis. In the decisive third set, Tsitsipas was the first to break, but couldn’t seal the match in his favor. Ruud showed massive mental stability, saving an incredible 11 out of 12 break points he faced during the match.
Alexander Zverev vs Jakub Mensik: Drama and Comebacks Belong to Zverev (2-1)
Alexander Zverev survived heavy drama against Jakub Mensik, winning 2-1 (6-1, 6-7, 6-3) in 2 hours and 20 minutes of play. After Zverev dominantly took the first set with as many as 12 aces in the match, Mensik completely bounced back, won the second set, and got the first break in the third (leading 2-1). However, the German quickly recovered, immediately broke back for 2-2, and then made another crucial break for 5-3, routinely bringing the match to an end.
Flavio Cobolli vs Daniil Medvedev: The Fall of the Seventh Seed (2-1)
Flavio Cobolli caused a massive upset by knocking out the 7th seed Daniil Medvedev 2-1 (6-3, 5-7, 6-4). The match was extremely tense and lasted 2 hours and 21 minutes. Although Medvedev managed to win the second set and prolong the match, the Italian tennis player was more solid in the third set and deservedly secured a spot in the quarterfinals.

The young Belgian Alexander Blockx continues to shock the tennis world! After knocking out Auger-Aliassime in the previous round, his new victim is the heavy favorite Francisco Cerundolo, whom he defeated 2-0 (7-6, 6-2). The first set was extremely tight and was decided in a tie-break (10-8 for the Belgian), after which Blockx completely broke the Argentine’s resistance in the second set, claiming the victory in 1 hour and 40 minutes.
