Tsitsipas Breaks Kypson’s Resistance to End Slump
After two consecutive losses and a period of lackluster form, Stefanos Tsitsipas finally secured a victory, but only after an exhausting marathon against Patrick Kypson. The Greek showed his strength on serve, firing 14 aces and winning a high 86% of points on his first serve. Although Kypson recorded 11 aces and put up incredible resistance, Stefanos’ composure in the decisive tie-breaks earned him a much-needed triumph, winning 2-1 (3-6, 7-6, 7-6).
Mérida Aguilar and Carreno-Busta: A Spanish Party in Madrid
The home crowd had plenty of reasons to cheer. Young Daniel Mérida Aguilar, a qualifier and recent finalist at the Tiriac Open in Bucharest, continued his excellent form. In a match full of turnarounds, he defeated Marco Trungelliti 2-1 (6-4, 1-6, 7-6). Mérida recorded a massive 44 winners and saved two match points, demonstrating incredible mental toughness in front of his fans.
The celebration was completed by Pablo Carreno-Busta, who, as a tournament wildcard (WC), took down Marton Fucsovics after a comeback win – 2-1 (4-6, 7-6, 6-2). The Spaniard was surgically precise in the third set, converting 3 out of 7 break point opportunities, while the Hungarian’s physical level dropped in the final stretch.
Adios, Gael: Monfils Bids Farewell to the Madrid Clay
The emotional moment of the day was Gael Monfils’ loss to Camilo Ugo Carabelli, with the Argentinian winning routinely 2-0 (6-3, 6-4). Monfils struggled with his second serve, winning only 29% of those points, while Carabelli was relentless at the net with a 75% success rate. The French veteran left the court to a standing ovation from the crowd, marking the end of an era in Madrid.
