Today’s schedule in Munich delivered a major sensation, while the favorites from the top half of the draw lived up to expectations. As one seed faces a serious results crisis, a young Brazilian star continues to justify his status as one of the most exciting players to watch in 2026.
Vit Kopriva Extends Darderi’s Slump
The biggest surprise of the day was delivered by Czech player Vit Kopriva, who eliminated the 6th seed Luciano Darderi with a score of 2:1 (6:1, 4:6, 6:1) after two hours and two minutes. For Darderi, this marks the third consecutive tournament where he has exited in the early stages. Kopriva dominated the first and third sets, converting 5 out of 6 break point opportunities. Darderi struggled with discipline once again, tallying 27 unforced errors.
Joao Fonseca: Sustaining the Winning Streak
Our “Player to Watch” from the specialized talent tracking section, young Brazilian Joao Fonseca, continued his fantastic run in Munich. Today, he defeated Arthur Rinderknech with a score of 2:0 (6:3, 6:2) in just one hour and 22 minutes. Fonseca played a mechanically precise match on his serve, saving all 9 break points he faced. With this victory, Fonseca firmly confirms his place among the players set to define this clay-court season.
Shelton and Cobolli Cruise to the Next Round
Second seed Ben Shelton justified his position by defeating the young Belgian Alexander Blockx 2:0 (6:4, 7:6). Although Blockx put up a great fight in the second set, Shelton proved why he is at the top of world tennis, winning 74% of points on his serve and not losing a single service game throughout the match.
Similarly, Flavio Cobolli outclassed Zizou Bergs with a 2:0 (6:2, 6:3) victory in just one hour and 14 minutes. Cobolli was relentless on the return, winning 48% of points against his opponent’s serve and converting all three break points that came his way.
