The third round (Round of 32) of the Miami Open 2026 has delivered a massive tennis earthquake. What was supposed to be a routine warm-up for the top seeds turned into a nightmare for some of the sport’s biggest stars. In just 24 hours, the tournament lost its top seed, the defending champion, and several heavy favorites.
Here is the complete recap of one of the craziest rounds in recent tournament history.
1. The Fall of Giants: Tsitsipas, Medvedev, and Alcaraz Pack Their Bags
The biggest shock of the day was definitely delivered by the young French tennis player Arthur Fils, who completely dismantled Stefanos Tsitsipas with a 2-0 victory (6-0, 6-1). The Greek player looked completely unrecognizable and helpless against the Frenchman’s aggressive play.
The string of upsets continued with Francisco Cerundolo, who knocked out Daniil Medvedev 2-1 after a grueling three-set battle. When we add the sensational defeat of top seed Carlos Alcaraz by Sebastian Korda (2-1), it is clear that the draw has completely blown open.
Furthermore, the tournament also lost its defending champion, Jakub Mensik, who was defeated in an epic third-set tie-break thriller by crowd favorite Frances Tiafoe, 2-1 (7-6, 4-6, 7-6).
2. Sinner and Zverev Survive the Purge
While other top seeds were falling, Jannik Sinner showed exactly why he is one of the main favorites for the title. The Italian claimed a routine 2-0 victory against Corentin Moutet (6-1, 6-4).
On the other hand, Alexander Zverev had to put in a lot more effort. Croatian veteran Marin Cilic put up a great fight, but Zverev ultimately took the win 2-1 in sets (6-2, 5-7, 6-4).
3. Young Guns and New Faces in the Round of 16
Besides Fils, young Spaniard Martin Landaluce is also having a spectacular tournament, securing a massive 2-0 win over Karen Khachanov (6-3, 7-6). Another surprise came from Valentin Vacherot, who eliminated Matteo Berrettini in straight sets (7-6, 6-4), while Frenchman Terence Atmane shocked Felix Auger-Aliassime with a 2-1 victory.
