Another clash between youth and experience unfolded at the Rotterdam ATP 500, as Jaume Munar produced an outstanding performance to defeat wild card Nicolai Budkov Kjaer in straight sets, showcasing a level far above the scoreline.
First Set: Munar Takes Control After Early Scare
The opening moments offered encouragement for the young Norwegian. Budkov Kjaer, ranked No. 132 in the ATP rankings and playing on a wild card, held serve in the opening game and immediately put pressure on Munar’s serve in the second, earning two break points.
Once those chances slipped away, the momentum shifted completely. Munar raised his intensity and precision, reeling off three consecutive breaks and taking full command of the set.
It was less a reflection of Kjaer’s level and more a testament to Munar’s exceptional play. The Spaniard dictated rallies, defended relentlessly, and found solutions in every situation, closing out the first set comfortably 6–1.
Second Set: Experience Makes the Difference
Budkov Kjaer remained competitive early in the second set, staying close on the scoreboard until Munar edged ahead 3–2.
At that point, the Spaniard struck again, securing a crucial break to move in front 4–2. He confirmed the break with authority and, after Kjaer held once more, stepped up to serve for the match.
Munar showed no hesitation, closing out the encounter smoothly to claim the second set 6–3.
Munar Shines on an Unfamiliar Surface
Although Munar is widely regarded as a clay-court specialist, his performance in Rotterdam defied that label. He struck cleanly from the baseline, retrieved seemingly impossible balls in defense, and controlled the match from start to finish.
