French player Titouan Droguet, ranked No. 150 on the ATP list, pulled off a major upset at the ATP Montpellier, defeating Dutch favorite Tallon Griekspoor (ATP No. 29) in straight sets and delighting the home crowd.
With a composed and fearless performance, Droguet secured a 2–0 victory and booked his place in the semifinals.
Perfectly Balanced First Set Decided by a Dramatic Tiebreak
The opening set was extremely tight, with both players serving at a very high level. Neither player earned a single break point, underlining the dominance of the servers.
The balance was reflected in the total number of points won — 36 points each in the first set.
Statistically, Droguet was the more aggressive player. He recorded twice as many winners, but also twice as many unforced errors. On serve, the Frenchman was particularly impressive, firing 11 aces, compared to 5 from Griekspoor.
The set was eventually decided in a tense tiebreak, featuring seven mini-breaks. Droguet managed one mini-break more than his opponent, which proved decisive as he claimed the tiebreak 7–5.
Medical Timeout and Total Domination in the Second Tiebreak
The second set followed a similar pattern, with both players once again holding serve comfortably. Droguet had the only break point of the set, but failed to convert, sending the match into yet another tiebreak.
Midway through the second set, Griekspoor requested a medical timeout due to pain in his upper back, which appeared to affect his movement and intensity.
In the second-set tiebreak, Droguet was completely dominant. Playing aggressively and with great confidence, he allowed Griekspoor just one single point, winning the tiebreak 7–1 with ease.
