Australian Open 2026: Press conference insight
Following his straight-sets victory at the Australian Open, Novak Djokovic spoke about the importance of efficiency, mental control and strategic energy management as the tournament moves deeper into its second week.
Although the match ended in three sets, Djokovic described the third set as a significant mental test, noting that closing it without extending the match was crucial for maintaining momentum moving forward.
Winning efficiently matters
Djokovic emphasized that while his results so far have been convincing, the focus remains on managing energy rather than conserving it artificially on court. He stressed that his mindset is always to give his maximum on the day, while being as efficient as possible within that effort.
With nine sets won from nine so far, Djokovic expressed satisfaction with both his movement and physical condition, adding that he feels as good as he has in some time.
Strategic recovery over constant practice
The Serbian also revealed that he has adjusted his training schedule between rounds, prioritizing recovery over unnecessary practice sessions. Together with his team, daily decisions are made based on how his body responds, particularly given the demands of best-of-five-set matches.
Djokovic underlined that at Grand Slams, recovery time between matches is often more valuable than additional court time.
Respect for Stan Wawrinka’s legacy
Asked about Stan Wawrinka, who played what may have been his final Australian Open, Djokovic spoke with deep respect about their rivalry and friendship. He praised Wawrinka’s longevity, passion and resilience, highlighting his recent four-hour battle as a testament to his character and career.
Djokovic described Wawrinka as a great champion on and off the court, noting that his legacy will continue to inspire future generations.
Perspective on age and competition
Addressing questions about age and competing against younger opponents, Djokovic reiterated his belief that when he feels physically and mentally right, he can still challenge and beat anyone on tour. He acknowledged that deeper rounds require greater physical output, but added that the early stages of the season provide a better opportunity to test himself at the highest level.
For now, Djokovic remains focused on daily execution rather than long-term projections, stressing that adaptability and balance will be key as the tournament progresses.
As the tournament progresses, Djokovic’s focus now turns to the challenges awaiting him in the next round, outlined in our Australian Open Day 8 Preview.
