Alex De Minaur booked his place in the Rotterdam ATP 500 final with a composed 6–4, 6–3 victory over Ugo Humbert in the opening semi-final on Centre Court inside the AHOY Arena.
The clash brought together two contrasting styles — De Minaur’s consistency and defensive resilience against Humbert’s aggressive, first-strike tennis. In the end, efficiency in key moments proved decisive.
First Set: Early Break Makes the Difference
De Minaur applied pressure early, attacking Humbert’s serve in the third game. After the Frenchman saved one break point, the Australian converted the second to move ahead 2–1.
Despite consolidating the break, De Minaur faced immediate trouble on his own serve, falling behind 0–40 before winning five consecutive points to hold and maintain control.
Humbert held his remaining service games comfortably, but De Minaur had to dig deep again in the eighth game, saving two more break points. Serving for the set, the top seed remained steady and closed it out 6–4.
Second Set: Missed Chances Cost Humbert
The pattern continued in the second set. De Minaur broke immediately in the opening game and once again faced pressure in his own service games.
Humbert repeatedly created opportunities but failed to capitalize. At 4–3, the Frenchman earned three break points but was unable to convert any of them.
Serving to stay in the match, Humbert appeared visibly frustrated by his missed chances. De Minaur capitalized on the dip in focus, securing the decisive break and sealing the match 6–4, 6–3.
The Numbers Behind the Match
The statistics underlined the fine margins. Humbert played the more aggressive tennis, striking 12 winners compared to just 4 from De Minaur.
However, that aggression came at a cost. The Frenchman committed 41 unforced errors, nearly double De Minaur’s 23. Most significantly, Humbert failed to convert 10 break-point opportunities — a number that ultimately defined the match.
With this victory, De Minaur advances to the final, where he will face the winner of the semi-final between Alexander Bublik and Felix Auger-Aliassime.
