Draw That Nobody Saw Coming
When the bracket was set in Acapulco, few would have predicted this semifinal lineup. The top seed, world No. 4 Alexander Zverev, is gone. The second seed and two-time defending champion Alex de Minaur, gone. The third seed — gone. Fourth seed Davidovich Fokina, gone.
What remains is arguably the most open ATP 500 semifinal day of the season, and at the center of it all stands a 26-year-old Serbian who, just last Saturday, was questioning why he was even playing tennis.
SEMIFINAL 1 — 02:00 CET
Miomir Kecmanovic vs Flavio Cobolli
The Cinderella Story: Kecmanovic’s Road to the Semis
| Round | Opponent | Score |
|---|---|---|
| R1 | Tristan Schoolkate | 6-2, 6-2 |
| R2 | Alexander Zverev (No.1 seed) | 6-3, 6-7(3), 7-6(4) ⚡ |
| QF | Terence Atmane | 6-3, 6-3 |
Kecmanovic entered his match against Zverev with a 0-11 career record against Top 5 players. He left it with his first-ever Top 5 win — and with a story that tennis fans will be talking about for years. He landed 13 aces, kept double faults to just three, and won 69% of his second-serve points against the world No. 4.
The quarterfinal against Atmane had its own dramatic twist: Atmane was penalized a point for a time violation while Kecmanovic was preparing to serve on match point — handing the Serbian the victory under ATP rules after Atmane grabbed his towel between points. The result was the same regardless: Kecmanovic was clinical, efficient, and in control.
“Last Saturday I was like, what is this? Why am I playing like this? I think every player has hated the game at least once in a lifetime, but now you feel like you’re in the sky,” Kecmanovic told Mexican media.
Cobolli’s Road: Smoother, But No Less Impressive
| Round | Opponent | Score |
|---|---|---|
| R1 | Rodrigo Pacheco Mendez | 7-6(3), 7-6(3) |
| R2 | Dalibor Svrcina | 6-4, 6-4 |
| QF | Wu Yibing | 7-6(4), 6-1 |
The Italian saved all eight break points he faced against Wu Yibing and dominated the second set — staying mentally positive despite a difficult start to his 2026 season. “I think when you don’t play like you want, but you still stay positive in your mindset — I think it’s great for me because it’s never happened in the past,” Cobolli said.
This will be Cobolli’s third ATP 500 semifinal, having previously reached that stage in Washington and Hamburg. For Kecmanovic, it is his very first at this level.
Head-to-Head & Prediction
Their only prior meeting was four years ago in Naples — a 6-1, 6-2 demolition in Kecmanovic’s favor on hard courts. But both players have evolved considerably since then.
Cobolli has not defeated anyone ranked better than 66th this season, while Kecmanovic — despite his ranking of 84 — is currently playing at a top-30 level.
Our Prediction: Kecmanovic in 2 or 3 sets. The form, the momentum, and the confidence from beating Zverev all point in one direction. Acapulco’s slow, hot hard courts favor consistent baseline players — exactly Kecmanovic’s profile. The “Acapulco Curse” swallowed Zverev and de Minaur. Cobolli could be next.
SEMIFINAL 2 — 03:30 CET
Frances Tiafoe vs Brandon Nakashima
Tiafoe’s Road: Survived a Scare, Then Cruised
| Round | Opponent | Score |
|---|---|---|
| R1 | Nuno Borges | 6-4, 6-4 |
| R2 | Aleksandar Kovacevic | 6-4, 3-6, 7-6(7) (saved 2 match points) |
| QF | Mattia Bellucci | 6-3, 6-4 |
The Kovacevic match tells you everything you need to know about Tiafoe — trailing in the deciding tiebreak, facing two match points, he found another gear. That mentality, that big-match personality, is what makes him dangerous on any surface on any day.
Nakashima’s Road: Quiet, Clean, Consistent
| Round | Opponent | Score |
|---|---|---|
| R1 | Elias Ymer | 6-3, 6-4 |
| R2 | Patrick Kypson | 6-4, 6-4 |
| QF | Valentin Vacherot | 2-6, 6-2, 6-3 |
Nakashima lost the first set against Vacherot, found his level, and closed it out convincingly. No drama, no panic — just relentless, high-quality tennis.
Head-to-Head & Prediction
Tiafoe leads their career head-to-head 6-1, and has won 12 of their last 16 sets. Their most recent meeting was a 6-4, 7-6(3) Tiafoe win in the 2025 Houston semifinals.
Our Prediction: Tiafoe in straight sets. The head-to-head dominance is striking. Nakashima is a genuine threat — his consistency and return game are elite — but Tiafoe’s combination of power, variety, and mental toughness on big points makes him the clear favorite. Expect a competitive first set before Tiafoe pulls away.
The Bigger Picture: What This Week Tells Us
This Acapulco draw did not just produce upsets — it revealed something important about the depth of men’s tennis in 2026. Kecmanovic was ranked 84th when this tournament started. He may finish it as the champion. That kind of variance at ATP 500 level is remarkable.
For fans of tactical, baseline-heavy hard court tennis, Saturday’s final — whoever reaches it — promises to be excellent viewing.
